Your local school needs you...

Phil and Jim is a local Church of England Primary school educating children from 5 to 11 years old. They have a committed Governing Body and are looking to strengthen their Governor skill set to continue to improve.

The main responsibilities of a Governor

As part of a team:

  • Setting the strategic direction of the school;
  • Holding the leadership to account for the performance of the school;
  • Making sure that resources are used well, and that money is well spent.

Requirements

There are no specific qualifications required for the role of governor, and you do not need to be a parent at the school. We would be delighted to hear from potential governors who have particular skills or experience in finance, fundraising, business management, communication or education, but please don’t be put off if you don’t have expertise in one of those fields. What governors do need is an interest in the school and in the welfare of its pupils, together with the time and willingness to get involved.

Time Commitment

Full governing board meetings are on Wednesday evenings, 6 per year, maximum 2 hours. Committee meetings are usually during the school day, lasting maximum 1 hour, but flexible to suit the committee members. Occasional training is online and flexible. Occasional monitoring visits are during the school day.

Why volunteer?

Volunteering as a School Governor is a great opportunity to gain leadership experience at board level as well as transferable skills that enhance performance and employability. We provide training through Oxfordshire Governor Services and the NGA, as well as mentoring by fellow governors. Most of all, you will have the satisfaction of making a real difference to children’s lives and helping them to realise their potential.

For more information and an application form, or to arrange an informal chat with a governor please contact office@philandjim.org.uk.

Applicants will be subject to a DBS and Section 128 check.
