New Traffic Proposals from the County Council

As many of you may have seen in the press, the County Council has issued the following statement with regard to their traffic schemes:

"We’ve been looking at options to reduce congestion in and around Oxford as our plan to implement the trial of six traffic filters is postponed until Botley Road reopens.
On the 17 June the council’s cabinet will consider approving a public consultation on a temporary congestion charge. The scheme would improve bus services and make it easier for those with permits, including carers, traders and blue badge holders, to travel by car into and around the city.

If approved by cabinet, the public consultation will start on 23 June.

We will keep you posted as and when any public consultation is announced.

Central Government calls for proposals to create 'Unitary Authorities' in Oxfordshire

Last year the County, District and City Councils were asked by Central Government to make a proposal to create one or more Unitary Authorities to replace the existing structure of 'District/City' and 'County' Councils. Many areas of the North of England have already been reorganised in this way and our area has been asked for a single proposal by November of this year. The aim would be to simplify the provision of services, reduce costs and make everything simpler/work better for all stakeholders (e.g. residents, employers).

The Districts involved are West Oxfordshire, Cherwell District, Vale of the White Horse, South Oxfordshire and then City of Oxford. These have variable population sizes, economies and needs. The County is examining alternative ways of grouping them into one, two or even three Unitary Authorities and last week The City of Oxford released details of their views.

New Oxford Travel Options Website

A new website has been created with the aim of cutting congestion by giving practical information on sustainable travel. If you are trying to avoid queues, find a new cycle route or confused by bus routes, please take a look here. The website brings together information and advice on buses, bikes, walking, Park & Ride, lift sharing and scooting. It was developed by Low Carbon Oxford North in collaboration with the Zero Carbon Oxfordshire Partnership.
